Compton House is a Georgian country house, situated at the foot of the Mendips, with captivating views across the Somerset Levels and within walking distance of medieval Axbridge. This Grade 2 listed house, parts of which date back to medieval times, offers you the informal elegance of a historic Somerset manor house with the comfort, homely atmosphere and friendly hospitality that keeps guests coming back. Accommodation is available in five well appointed bedrooms, located on the first floor over two landings which are accessed by a large crinoline staircase. All rooms are spacious and have many original historic features. Each bedroom has been furnished with family antique furniture and is equipped with modern facilities to make your stay comfortable. Compton House lies at the west end of Axbridge, a medieval town mentioned in the Domesday Book and still retains many original buildings and a town square. The Square can still be a busy place, hosting lively local events such as the Blackberry Carnival, Somerset Showcase, as well as a monthly farmer’s market. Axbridge is an ideal centre for walking, with Sedgemoor and the Somerset Levels to the south and the Mendip Hills sheltering the town to the north. There are many attractions to fill your days including the Cheddar Caves, historic Wells and Bath, meditative Glastonbury and bustling Bristol within a short drive.

Compton House was originally the family home of playwright Christopher Fry's great, great grandparents and the house remains much as it was in the seventeenth century with its mullioned windows, flag stones and original fireplaces. Guests may enjoy breakfast in the dining room with other guests, or you can eat privately in the drawing room, morning room, or in the garden if the weather is good. A generous breakfast is provided and guests may choose all or some of the following; cereals, local yoghurts, juices, toasts/croissants, local sausage and bacon, and much more. Vegetarian breakfasts are also provided. Breakfast is provided at a time that suits you, and there is complimentary tea/coffee available during your stay. Compton House has private dining facilities and the owner Patricia, will cook evening meals for you. Menus are based on seasonal, locally sourced West Country and Fair Trade produce, flavoured with her garden herbs and will tempt you with an array of fine wines, local ciders and beers. Guests may relax in the large garden with outdoor seating. Each bedroom is equipped with Wi-Fi, digital flatscreen television, refreshment facilities, books and magazines, handmade soap and fresh milk can be delivered to your room each morning if required.
