St John’s College celebrated its 500th Anniversary in 2011. The College was founded on the site of the 13th century Hospital of St John in Cambridge, expanding over the subsequent five hundred years to become the largest of the Oxford and Cambridge Colleges by area. St John's has magnificent gardens and extends onto the famous Cambridge Backs beyond the River Cam, with its courts connected by the beautiful Bridge of Sighs. Although the Main Gate of the College leads right into the heart of the city, the College courts provide a serene and peaceful environment for our guests. The Bed and Breakfast offers bedrooms in our recently refurbished rooms situated in North Court ,Chapel and in Third Court. These rooms accommodate students during Term time. Both twin and single rooms are available and all have ensuite facilities. The rooms are serviced daily. The twin rooms have separate beds in different rooms and connected with a small lounge. We have been awarded a 4* rating by Enjoy England, for the last three years, the last audit being in August 2016. Please note there are no lifts to any of the rooms. PLEASE NOTE THE MINIMUM AGE OF A CHILD THAT IS ALLOWED TO VISIT WITH AN ADULT IS 16 YEARS

St John’s College was founded on the 9th April 1511, its charter sealed by the executors of the foundress, Lady Margaret Beaufort (mother of King Henry VII) who had begun the process of transforming the ancient hospital of St John the Evangelist, Cambridge, into a college for students in the liberal arts and theology. College alumni have included the classicist Roger Ascham, the social reformer William Wilberforce, the poet William Wordsworth, the physicist Paul Dirac, and the athlete Christopher Brasher. The rate includes a full English Breakfast, served in the Buttery Dining Room between 08:00-10:00. which is located in 2nd Court, next to the College Bar We are unable to offer dinner. The College Bar, is open from 12.30-14.30 and again from 18.30-23.00(22:30 on a Sunday), their is a range of snack food available, Fairtrade Coffee and Tea and also offering a selection of International lagers and local beers plus a superb range of wines and Champagnes, including our own College labelled Port and Sherry. These make for the perfect gift and a permenant reminder of your stay at St Johns. It is one of the best traditional colleges. We look forward to seeing you in the Bar We have carried out Allergy Awareness training with our staff. All our staff are fully trained, in food hygiene to way beyond the minimum level, and we have a continuous training programme, for all the Catering Staff. We have won awards for our local sourcing of food products and we are a member of the Sustainable Restaurants Association with a 2 Star rating and we were one of the first within the Univesity sector to have achieved the Case study on top of the 2 stars. In Tudor times the landscape of St John's was strikingly different from today. On part of the present site of New Court and the Cripps Building lay fish ponds which had once served the brethren of the Hospital of St John. To the south of these, where the sandy Broad Walk now crosses St John's Meadow, was the Close, surrounded by trees and ditches. Beyond the ditch at the western edge of the meadow stretched pasture and open arable fields. By the seventeenth century, the gardens at St John's had expanded and taken on a more formal aspect, along with with the creation of a bowling-green in 1625; An avenue of tall limes, with one hundred metres of yew hedges on each side, lead down to the Queen's road gate of the College, beside the Fellows' Garden and the wildlife haven of the Fellows' Wilderness. Allow time to walk by the beautiful River Cam which flows through the college, and to view the world famous Bridge of Sighs of which Queen Victoria was a great admirer. Rooms are serviced daily and included in the room rate. There is also 24hrs security. Wi-Fi is offered throughout most of the College, it has to go through the University net work, and information is included in the folder in the room. Guests are welcome to view the Chapel, and to attend if a public service is taking place. We are active members of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce.
