Situated in the historic market town of Pickering on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, The White Swan is a traditional 16th century coaching inn offering the perfect rural retreat. Stay in a Vintage bedroom in the main hotel, or one of the Hideaway rooms in the converted stables. The bedrooms are comfortable and designed with its own theme with the comfiest beds, the finest bed linen, plump cushions and carefully chosen furniture and modern luxury bathrooms. Pickering, a charming market town known as the ‘Gateway to the Moors’ is bursting with character and has plenty to offer whatever your reason for visiting is. Being the southern terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway the town is the starting point for many a journey. Pickering is at the heart of a myriad of other places of interest and activities too, with Scarborough, Whitby, Helmsley and Malton all within a short drive there are endless days out.

The White Swan Inn is family owned and run. It has been in the ownership of the Buchanan family for 25 years, and the new Buchanan generation took over in 1996. Originally built in 1532 as a four-room cottage, it was soon extended and pressed into service as a coaching inn for the York to Whitby stagecoach. Devious smugglers moving salt from Whitby via Saltersgate to York also used it. Still visible today at the side of the old stone building are the joist stones that once supported an aerial walkway. It went from what is now bedroom 2 across the alley and into the small entrance next-door, also still visible. According to the legend, when the Excise man came looking for salt and was busy searching the cellars, the smugglers used this route to transfer the salt next door. The stunning yet relaxed restaurant with its stone flagged floors and roaring fire in the winter is known for its fantastic food using only the freshest local ingredients. There are big comfortable sofas to sink into whilst you choose your dinner, a proper bar and cellar serving at least 6 wines by the glass and a choice of real ales all from Yorkshire. It all begins with the best and freshest local ingredients that working with local suppliers ensures. And at The White Swan Inn local means local. The head chef Darren Clemmit personally guarantees that over 80% the ingredients are hand picked from the best Yorkshire has to offer. Everything is homemade including most of the bread, the ice cream, chutneys and conserves … even the ketchup! With a menu that changes monthly, you’ll get to choose from traditional Yorkshire favourites as well as great seasonal menu selections. Lunch is served from 12.00pm until 2.00pm and dinner from 6:45pm until 9.00pm. To reserve your table, please write your requirements in the Additional Information section of the booking form. The inn has an outdoor area with seating to enjoy a drink or a bite to eat. Every bedrooms includes; Complimentary Wi-Fi, luxurious Bath House toiletries, comfy sitting area in (Superior and Hideaway bedrooms), luxury white bathrobes, tea, coffee & homemade biscuits, flat screen TV & DVD player.
